Betty Boop is ultimately associated with sexuality, charm and ‘heart over brains’! With references drawn by Helen Kane and Baby Esther, she became sensational when introduced to the public with controversy. Throughout the years, she's had several revisions, yet she remained highly sexualised in the eyes of most. She has been described as a feminist and independent, as well as a good and humble housewife. She has a bold look, yet she is delicate! Despite having been quite the fantasy over the decades, she was considered an uplifting character directly related to the Depression era, even though she was accused of her overly sexual appearance as an element of profanity, especially for an animation.
Michelle is a woman who self-identifies as a ‘woman of pleasure’ and provides her services to men who seek company for money. She is a very humble-looking and humble-acting person who followed the path of the profession out of need and fear! She is independent and dynamic.
Here, the juxtaposition of Michelle's story and Betty's episode almost works as a conversation between the two, and with everyone they come across during this old scene of the iconic cartoon. This reflects the sex worker’s routine, but also the way Betty was essentially seen. It is a conscious 'interrogation' of the way the two characters have chosen to live life and an invitation to ponder how one lives their very life nonchalantly and unapologetically.
The subtitles here work as a replacement for the original sound that has intentionally been distorted in trying to establish an environment where it's indicated the interview is what really happens, taking over the lines of the plot in the episode.
I do not own the copyrights to the Betty Boop animated film and have no intention to make a profit off it.
